What you need to know

In Queensland, everyone loves driving. The roads are great, the weather is amazing and the drivers are friendly. If you want to join this big family behind the wheel you need your driving licence. Once you turn 16, you can apply for your learner licence. This allows you to drive under the supervision of an experienced driver who has held their open license for at least one year.

Getting your Learner License

First things first, to get your learner licence you'll need to pass a written road rules test. The written test for a car consists of 30 multiple-choice questions about road rules and driver licence requirements. All the information you need to pass the test can be found here: Your keys to driving in Queensland.

Applying for the test

Now you're ready to apply for a learner licence at a Department of Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre. If there isn't one nearby, you may also be able to apply at a QGAP office or a local police station.

What you'll need to take

Don’t forget to take with you a completed driver licence application form F3000, your evidence of identity and a medical certificate (if required). You'll also need to pay for both the written test and license fee.

...

Practice Test

To boost your confidence you can try out our practice driving test. The transport department also has an online road rules practice test.

What's next?

If you pass the written road rules test, you will receive your learner licence, a learner’s kit and a logbook. If you do not pass the written test, it’s not the end of the world; you just have to wait until the next business day and you'll be able to take it again. However, you will have to pay the test fee once for each time you take the test.

In order to drive by yourself, you'll need to progress to a P1 provisional license. You'll need to be at least 17, have held your learner license for more than a year and have 100 hours of supervised driving recorded in your logbook. You'll then submit your logbook and book your practical driving test (this can be done through your instructor). Once you've passed the test, you'll be able to drive entirely unsupervised!
